Indians Purchase Contract of Gonzalez from Columbus

The Cleveland Indians announced on Sunday morning that the contract of outfielder Carlos Gonzalez has been purchased from Triple-A Columbus.

In corresponding moves to get Gonzalez on the 25- and 40-man rosters, Saturday’s starting pitcher Jefry Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A, while injured starter Mike Clevinger was transferred from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list. Read More

The Cleveland Indians have a decision to make later this month on Carlos Gonzalez, who has an April 20 opt-out date in the minor league contract that he signed in March. The 33-year-old right fielder is making it an easy one for the Indians front office.

Gonzalez, an eleven-year Major League veteran with his best seasons in the rearview, did not sign with the Indians until March 19, when he agreed to a minor league deal that could pay him $2 million if in the Majors with another $1 million available in incentives, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. Columbus may open the International League schedule on Thursday night, but even more eyes will be on the club on Friday, when the Clippers will become Los Veleros de Columbus for the first of 397 Copa de la Diversión games scattered across the minor league landscape on the 2019 schedule.
