On July 29, 2018, Jim Thome took his place among the other baseball immortals in Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame. Three weeks later, Thome returned home to Cleveland, where he was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame and had his number 25 retired that afternoon.

Thome’s selection last year made him the club’s first Hall of Famer since Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven gained entrance in 2011. Read More

Switch-hitter Max Moroff has a chance to be the next 26 for the Cleveland Indians, as long as he can win the utility infielder spot on the roster by the end of spring training. The 25-year-old has three big league seasons under his belt while with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but was picked up by the Tribe this offseason in a trade with the Buccos. Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 28 days

Should Corey Kluber continue his steady production over the final three years of his contract with the Cleveland Indians, there is a fair chance that his number 28 will one day be retired in his honor by the Tribe.

The surprising career of Cleveland’s ace has resulted in four top three finishes in the American League’s Cy Young voting over the last five years (including becoming the first Indians pitcher to win the award twice when he did so in 2014 and 2017). Even last year, when it felt at times that he was not as dominant as he had been in years past, Kluber still landed a third place finish in the Cy voting while leading all of baseball in complete games and shutouts and leading the AL in innings pitched and walks per nine. Countdown to Opening Day – 29 days

The Cleveland Indians have seldom used the number 29 since the turn of the century. Just four players have worn it in that time over six of the 19 seasons since the world evaded any drastic Y2K related catastrophes. Its inconsistent use now is a stark contrast to some of the lean years for the Tribe, when the number was in use for more than 20 consecutive years from 1966 to 1989, capped off by time spent on the back of one of the team’s legendary sluggers.

A little change of scenery can sometimes do some good and that was the case for former Indian Andre Thornton. It was a trade to Cleveland in 1976 that reignited his struggling pro baseball career. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 30 – Tyler Naquin

Countdown to Opening Day – 30 days

Tyler Naquin kicked off his spring with the Tribe in nice fashion, yanking a pitch down the right field line at Goodyear Ballpark and over the wall for a solo home run, giving Cleveland its first run of Cactus League play in 2019. Will that be a positive omen for the right fielder, who is looking to stake his claim to a roster spot after several seasons of mixed results and injury?

Naquin’s third season in the number 30 for the Tribe came to a premature end last season after just 61 games. He had provided some encouraging numbers through the first half, but the injury bug’s repeated bites led to lackluster second half figures. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 31 – Danny Salazar

Countdown to Opening Day – 31 days

One year ago while addressing jersey number 31 in Tribe history, I wrote a story pondering the potential impact that Danny Salazar might have on the Cleveland Indians roster for the 2018 season. Now, I’m suffering a case of déjà vu as I have to do the same thing again for Salazar in regards to the 2019 campaign.

Last year, the answer was clear even from the start of spring camp that Salazar was not going to contribute a full year’s work to the club, as just days after pitchers and catchers reported to their designated Spring Training sites, the Indians announced that Salazar had injured his shoulder during an offseason workout the month prior and that he was already well behind other players reporting to Goodyear. That right shoulder inflammation was followed by setbacks in his throwing program and by the beginning of July, his season was over after an arthroscopic debridement and a bursectomy were performed on his throwing shoulder in the rotator cuff region. Countdown to Opening Day – 32 days

Last season, Adam Rosales made his return to the Majors in September, working in 13 games for the Tribe at all four infield spots to let the heavily used stars of the team catch a bit of a breather before the postseason. Like Rosales’ stay with the Indians, Cleveland’s postseason experience in 2018 was extremely brief.

In taking the field in the number 32, Rosales became the 50th player in Tribe history to wear the number. He is now in camp with the Minnesota Twins on a non-roster invitation, while the Indians have outfielder Trayce Thompson at their Goodyear complex on a similar deal while wearing the 32 himself. Indians Bring in Hanley Ramirez on a Minor League Pact

February 24, 2019 |

While you were sleeping, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweeted that the Cleveland Indians and free agent Hanley Ramirez had come to terms on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The move, which had not been announced by the Indians at the time of this story, was still pending a physical and details of the financials of the deal were unknown. Read More

Tribe and Reds Open Cactus League Play with a Tie

February 23, 2019 |

On a cool and rainy day in northeast Ohio, there was something comforting about seeing the Cleveland Indians back on the ball diamond once again.

A new look Tribe, returning one familiar face in Carlos Santana after purging several others in the offseason (including the loved-or-hated Chief Wahoo), will get its work in from Arizona this spring, with many roster spots up for grabs. In addition to a wide open battle for bullpen spots around closer Brad Hand, the Indians have a wildly uncertain outfield picture as well as a need to crown a utility man to start the season. Countdown to Opening Day – 33 days

With plenty of question marks on the Indians roster heading into the 2019 season, one of the answers that is known is that Brad Hand will take the mound in his number 33 looking to slam the door frequently.

While there is plenty of room for complaints about the Tribe’s lackluster offseason, one filled with the purging of more than a half dozen regular contributors to the lineup over the last few years, the team was forward thinking at the trade deadline last year when the Indians pulled off a trade with the San Diego Padres to bring Hand and Adam Cimber to Cleveland for top prospect Francisco Mejia (who wore 33 for the Tribe during the 2017 season). Knowing the exorbitant price on quality relief arms and with both Cody Allen and Andrew Miller hitting free agency after the 2018 season, the Indians elected to pick up two controllable arms from the Friars at the hefty cost of their top overall prospect. Countdown to Opening Day – 34 days

Two future Cy Young award winners in Cleveland, one future league Most Valuable Player, and an American League Rookie of the Year all spent time in the number 34 for the Cleveland Indians on the way to taking home some impressive hardware.

None of those applied to the last player to wear the number for the Indians, pitcher Zach McAllister, nor reliever Justin Grimm, who is in camp with the Indians on a non-roster spring invite in the number 34. Read More
