Countdown to Opening Day – 51 days

The number 51 has rarely been a sign of longevity for careers in a Cleveland Indians uniform. Just seven times since the number hit the field in 1929 has it been worn by the same player across multiple seasons on the shores of Lake Erie.

Right-hander Shawn Armstrong was the most recent to do so, but his stay in the number and in the Cleveland bullpen lasted parts of just three years. He was dealt by the Tribe following the 2017 season to Seattle, with the team looking to create spots on the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft. Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 54 days

The number 54 has had a tendency of being a short-term numerical destination for Cleveland Indians players, with few lasting more than a couple of seasons in the digits and fewer still surviving long stints with the club.

Similar can be said for last year’s number 54, reliever Hunter Wood, who switched numbers in the offseason to 44 (Logan Allen, who wore the number 53 temporarily for the Indians in 2019, will take on 54 in his second season with the organization). Read More

The pressure was on Roberto Perez for the 2019 season when the team traded mainstay and All-Star backstop Yan Gomes in November of 2018. Countdown to Opening Day – 56 days

The number 56 has seen plenty of usage in Cleveland Indians history, but oftentimes, it showed up on the backs of men who spent little time in town and bounced all around during their professional careers. Given that fact, it seems fitting that the first player to claim the digits as his own in both Indians and Major League history earned the moniker “Suitcase Bob” because of being a frequently relocated player in the golden days of baseball. Countdown to Opening Day – 60 days

As might be expected, the number 60 has not seen much use in the history of the Cleveland Indians. Believed to be worn for the first time in game action in 1988 by Rod Allen in just a handful of games, the number has seen minimal trips back to the field since on the back of a player. Of the five former players to wear the number, only Jhonny Peralta and Bill Selby wore it long enough to have more than a few cups of coffee with the club (and in both cases, the player switched to a far more typical number for the diamond in their next season).
