Clevinger Has Surgery on Right Knee

The full squad had not even reported to camp yet before the Cleveland Indians suffered a significant spring training injury.

The Indians announced on Friday that starting pitcher Mike Clevinger will miss what is expected to be six to eight weeks of action after suffering a partial tear of the meniscus in his left knee. Clevinger had been seen on crutches at the team’s complex after suffering the injury on Wednesday and he underwent surgery on Friday morning in Arizona to correct the damage done. Read More

Indians Make Santana Signing Official

After a week of speculation and his sighting at the Indians complex in Goodyear, Arizona, the team announced formally on Friday the signing of free agent outfielder Domingo Santana to a one-year contract with an option for 2021.

According to MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal, the $1.5 million deal comes complete with $500,000 in roster bonuses for the 2020 season. There is a $5 million option in place for 2021 that could grow based on each roster bonus earned this year. Cleveland can buy out the option for $250,000.

To make room for Santana on the 40-man roster, the Indians have designated utility man Andrew Velazquez for assignment. Read More

Major League Baseball retired Jackie Robinson’s number 42 across the game on April 15, 1997, on the 50th anniversary of his monumental breaking of the color barrier. Cleveland reliever Michael Jackson was one of 13 players who were wearing that number at the time and was allowed to continue wearing it, making him the last to call the number his own for the Indians. The player to last wear the number in 2018 was Josh Tomlin, who was one of just eight Cleveland players to wear the number for more than one season while doing so longer than any man in Indians history, holding claim to the number starting with his Major League debut in 2010 through the conclusion of his Tribe career following the 2018 season. Tribe Adds Catcher Rupp on Minor League Deal

The Indians announced a rare offseason move on Friday, as the club has come to an agreement on a minor league deal with free agent catcher Cameron Rupp. The contract includes a non-roster invitation to spring training, which begins a week from today.

Rupp’s name is added to the usual long list of catchers who will be in camp auditioning for a job for the Indians organization or elsewhere. In addition to starting catcher Roberto Perez and offseason trade acquisition Sandy Leon, the Indians added minor league catcher Beau Taylor on a non-roster invitation and also extended invites to prospects Kungkuan Giljegiljaw (formerly known as Li-Jen Chu) and Gavin Collins.

Rupp is the 20th player in camp for the Indians on a non-roster invite. Read More
