2018 Spring Training

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 30

February 27, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, our countdown has reached the 30-day mark to the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball regular season schedule. We at Did The Tribe Win Last Night continue to look ahead to the warmer days of the year by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 30 days

The Indians’ current number 30 is once again in spring camp for Cleveland, hoping to latch on to a spot in an outfield mix that has a few question marks heading into the 2018 season.

Tyler Naquin has had opportunities in each of the last two seasons to make a lasting impression on the coaching staff of the Indians, but he instead played his way back to Triple-A Columbus and watched other men fill the outfield void. Read More

Indians’ Spring Training First Weekend Recap

February 26, 2018 |

The first weekend of Cactus League play is in the books and the Cleveland Indians had, as expected, some good and some bad to show for it. After opening the spring training calendar with a home loss to the Cincinnati Reds, 6-4, on Friday from their shared complex at Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona, the Tribe notched its first win of the exhibition season with an 11-2 win on Saturday from Salt River Fields at Talking Stick against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They returned home to Goodyear, this time playing as the visitors on Sunday, playing to a 2-2 tie against a split-squad Reds team.

Now, a look at how some of the temporary residents of Arizona fared in their first weekend back out in the sun… Read More

Indians Add a Pair of Pitchers, Signing Belisle and Claiming Taylor

February 25, 2018 |

Even a week and a half after pitchers and catchers reported to Goodyear, Arizona, for the start of the Cleveland Indians’ spring training festivities, new faces continue to arrive to camp.

The Indians announced a pair of right-handed roster additions on Sunday, as the club signed free agent Matt Belisle and claimed Ben Taylor off of waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

To create room on the 40-man roster for Taylor, the Indians announced that right-hander Cody Anderson had been placed on the 60-day disabled list as he continues his return from Tommy John surgery early last year. He is in camp with the club working his way back from the procedure. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 32

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 32 days

The number 32 had been missing in regular action on the diamond for the Cleveland Indians for three and a half years, until Jay Bruce‘s arrival in Cleveland last August as a significant addition for the club’s postseason push.

Bruce is now gone, returning to the same New York Mets that dealt him last season during the waivers trading period on a three-year contract. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 33

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 33 days

The number 33 has a curious place in Indians history. It has been worn by a handful of prolific sluggers, generally outside of their glory years on the diamond, and at other times was on the backs of some of the better pitchers on the roster through the 1960s. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 34

February 23, 2018 |

Happy first day of Cactus League play for the Cleveland Indians as they start the spring schedule against the Cincinnati Reds. Join us at Did The Tribe Win Last Night as we look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 34 days

Two future Cy Young award winners in Cleveland, one future league Most Valuable Player, and an American League Rookie of the Year spent time in the number 34 for the Cleveland Indians. None of those apply to the current wearer of the number, Zach McAllister, but it does not take anything away from his role in the team’s bullpen for the year ahead. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 35

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 35 days

It would appear as though Abraham Almonte will get an opportunity to return to the Indians outfield in 2018 wearing his familiar number 35, something that he has done in more years than just a handful of players in club history. Heading into this season, only Wayne Kirby, Enrique Wilson, and Tom Buskey had spent more than three years in the 35. Read More

Tribe Tabs Righty Torres on Minor League Deal for Relief Depth

February 22, 2018 |

The Indians’ collection of arms grew by one more name on Wednesday as multiple reports indicated that Cleveland had added free agent right-hander Carlos Torres on a minor league deal with a non-roster invitation to spring training.

The deal with the 35-year-old Torres was pending a physical and had not yet been announced by the club. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 36 – Gaylord Perry

February 21, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 36 days

Jesus Aguilar occupied the number 36 for the Indians for a few cups of coffee over three seasons from 2014 through 2016, but he surrendered his claim to the digits when Cleveland designated him for assignment during last offseason and he joined up with the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Now, it is Yandy Diaz‘s number and the third baseman finds himself in a similar predicament to Aguilar’s preceding him – playing time is scarce for young players in Cleveland.

Production from three-sixes in Indians history has historically been minimal, with Aguilar’s years with the number exceeding the majority of those to wear it before him. A total of 51 players have reportedly worn the number for the Tribe in regular season action, but only a handful have spent more than a few seasons representing it on the field. One of the best to do so, without argument, was Gaylord Perry, who joined the Indians organization following the 1971 season. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 37

February 20, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 37 days

Another day is marked off of the calendar as we inch closer and closer to the start of the Cactus and Grapefruit League schedules. Today, we look at the number 37 and its role in Cleveland – most notably on the backs (and sometimes fronts) of Indians players throughout the club’s storied history. The number has been in heavy rotation for the last three and a half decades, appearing in every year since the Indians moved into their beautiful new home in the Gateway District and for nearly a decade before that. Just one time – during the final season that Cleveland Municipal Stadium served as the home of the Tribe – did the number fail to appear.

For the last six years, Cody Allen has championed the number. That will be no different this season, as the now veteran right-hander will once again serve as the closer in manager Terry Francona’s bullpen. But it could be the last season that Allen wears the number, at least for Cleveland – he is set to hit free agency at the end of the year. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 38

February 19, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 38 days

Thirty-nine players have worn the number 38 for the Indians, most recently reliever Joe Smith in his return to Cleveland last season.

Plenty of big names in franchise history have spent a spell in the number for the Tribe, including a pair of Hall of Famers – Bob Lemon (1941) and Early Wynn (1963) – and another legend in club history in Rocky Colavito (1955-57).

None of the players to don it since Wynn are Cooperstown bound, but that does not mean that they have not made some important contributions in Tribe history. The best have come from a pair of relievers – the aforementioned Smith, and 1990s right-hander Eric Plunk. Read More
