Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 5 – Lou Boudreau

March 24, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 5 days

Number five on our countdown is one of the handful of players honored in Indians history with a retired number. He was a man who held two very distinct titles during his tenure in Cleveland and several more nicknames for good measure. Whether you called him “Old Shufflefoot”, “Handsome Lou”, “Boy Wonder”, “The Good Kid”, or skipper, Lou Boudreau was one thing in the end – a Hall of Famer.

The Indians honored Boudreau on August 5th last season with a statue outside of Progressive Field, where he was immortalized alongside former teammates Bob Feller and Larry Doby, legendary slugger Jim Thome, and fellow former player-manager Frank Robinson, who was recognized earlier in the year. Davis to Break Camp with Tribe, Napoli Will Not Make Team

March 22, 2018 |

The Opening Day roster for the Cleveland Indians continues to take shape. Another puzzle piece fell into place on Thursday when manager Terry Francona announced that Rajai Davis would break camp with the club as a reserve outfielder.

It was one of several moves made on the day by the Indians, who also optioned young speedster Greg Allen and pitcher Ben Taylor to Triple-A Columbus and released first baseman Mike Napoli. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 8

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 8 days

Just as was the case with yesterday’s countdown representative, Erik Gonzalez, and his jersey number nine, the number eight may be soon destined to a new home in Cleveland.

Its current representative is Lonnie Chisenhall, the Tribe’s first round pick in the 2008 draft and a seven-year member of the team’s parent roster. The former third baseman turned right fielder enters the 2018 season in the final year of his contract with the Indians, so a return for 2019 and beyond is hardly guaranteed. Read More

MAC Hall Beckons for Hershiser from his BGSU Days

March 21, 2018 |

An honor awaits former Indians pitcher Orel Hershiser in Cleveland this summer.

Hershiser, a Bowling Green State University alumnus, is one of this year’s inductees into the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame along with former Steelers and Lions quarterback Charlie Batch (Eastern Michigan), former NFL running back Michael Turner (Northern Illinois), Toledo women’s basketball player Dana Drew-Shaw, and Carol Cartwright, who served as president of Kent State University and then BGSU.

The five inductees will be recognized at an honors dinner on May 30 at the Cleveland Renaissance Hotel – not far from Progressive Field, where Hershiser anchored the Indians’ starting rotation for three of the team’s most successful years in history. Read More

March 20, 2018 |

The countdown to Opening Day of the 2018 Major League Baseball regular season schedule has reached single digits. We at Did The Tribe Win Last Night continue our march to first pitch by looking back at Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 9 days

On the first official day of spring, the weather in the greater Cleveland area fails to deliver a feeling that baseball is around the corner, but fans can celebrate being just nine days away from Opening Day of the 2018 Major League Baseball season.

The number nine for the Cleveland Indians is, for the time being, on the back of Erik Gonzalez, utility man extraordinaire hoping to break camp at least one more time on the Tribe roster. That, however, remains to be seen as he is in a spring training battle with Giovanny Urshela and others for a spot on the team’s bench. Read More

Eleven Sent Out from Tribe Camp as Diaz Optioned, Upton Cut

March 19, 2018 |

With ten days until the start of the regular season, the Cleveland Indians made their biggest camp cuts of the spring on Monday as eleven players were optioned, reassigned, or released by the club. The moves lowered the team’s spring training population at the Goodyear complex from 50 residents to 39.

Most of the moves were expected, but a pair were much more significant to the makeup of things come March 29 when the season kicks off. Yandy Diaz and prospects Eric Haase and Eric Stamets were optioned to Triple-A Columbus. Offseason additions Brandon Barnes, Preston Claiborne, Stephen Fife, and Neil Ramirez, in addition to returning minor leaguers Cameron Hill and Richie Shaffer, were reassigned to minor league camp. Veteran catcher Ryan Hanigan and outfielder Melvin Upton, Jr. were given their releases from their previously agreed upon minor league deals to search for jobs elsewhere.

Diaz and Upton were the most significant moves of the day. Read More

Fan Favorite Davis Working Toward Major League Roster Spot

March 18, 2018 |

The last time Rajai Davis played a game that mattered for the Cleveland Indians, it was Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. He hit an eighth-inning, game-tying, two-run home run that sent Tribe fans into a frenzy and the shot is considered one of the greatest home runs in the more than 100-year history of the franchise (imagine if the Indians had actually won that game). Obviously, the team went on to lose the game and the Fall Classic, both considered among the greatest in baseball history, by an 8-7 margin in 10 frames.

Cleveland was not able to wrap up its unfinished business in 2017, despite a 102-win campaign that included a historic 22-game winning streak. Perhaps the club needed Davis in the fold to finish what it came so agonizingly close to doing two years ago. Read More

Houston’s Jose Altuve just received a massive payday from the Astros on Friday, netting a contract extension reportedly worth five years and more than $150 million.

That news does not bode well for the Cleveland Indians and their future affiliation (and negotiations) with star shortstop Francisco Lindor. Read More
