Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 20

March 9, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 20 days

Last May, the Cleveland Indians retired the jersey number 20 in honor of Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, adding it to the growing list of digits taken out of circulation by the organization and making it the first player number since Bob Lemon‘s 21 was de-listed in 1998. In addition to Lemon’s number, the numbers 3 (Earl Averill), 5 (Lou Boudreau), 14 (Larry Doby), 18 (Mel Harder), 19 (Bob Feller), and 42 (Jackie Robinson) are also unavailable to future members of the Tribe.

The number 20 made its final and memorable appearances on the diamond for the Indians on the back of Rajai Davis, whose heroics in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series nearly brought an end to the Tribe’s excruciatingly long title drought. One magical swing in the eighth inning of Game 7 brought the game to a tie and permanently etched his name into Indians lore. Read More

March 8, 2018 |

It is hard to believe, but we are just three short weeks away from the first pitches of the 2018 Major League Baseball season. Today, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night continue our countdown to Opening Day!

Countdown to Opening Day – 21 days

In 1998, Cleveland retired the number 21 in honor of longtime Tribe member Bob Lemon, whose transition from a position player to a quality starting pitcher led to seven trips to the Midsummer Classic, a leading role on the 1948 and 1954 American League champion Indians teams, and ultimately, a spot in Cooperstown in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

But while Lemon last wore the number on the field as a player with the Indians in 1958, several big names would honor the work that he had done in the jersey with quality careers in a Cleveland uniform in the years to come. Read More

Just a couple of short months ago, it seemed like there was a fair chance that Jason Kipnis’ days in the number 22 for the Cleveland Indians would be coming to an end.

Now, a few weeks into spring training, holding on to the two-time All-Star second baseman is looking like the right move. Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 24 days

For the last year and a half, 6’7” southpaw Andrew Miller, the current resident 24 in a Cleveland Indians uniform, has been one of the more dominant relief pitchers in the game, earning his first two All-Star appearances in that span. Now, the 32-year-old lefty is in the final year of his contract with the Indians, and if he continues to pitch as well as he has over the last few years, he will likely outprice himself from the team’s future. Countdown to Opening Day – 25 days

On July 29, Jim Thome will take his place among the other baseball immortals in Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame. Three weeks later, Thome will return home to Cleveland for part of the club’s Hall of Fame celebration in his honor on August 18. On that date, fans in attendance will receive a Thome giveaway jersey in a gesture that would seem to be linked to the likely retirement of his number 25 that evening.

While the Cleveland Indians have not formally announced that Thome’s jersey retirement will be part of the weekend ceremony honoring the club’s first Hall of Famer since Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven gained entrance in 2011, it seems a forgone conclusion that the Tribe will take the opportunity with the slugger in town to place his number among other Indians legends honored in such a way. When all is said and done, Corey Kluber may just see his number 28 retired among the other legends of Indians history, but he still has some work to do in order to get there. Luckily for Indians’ fans, he should be in town with the club for the next two to four years, and maybe longer.

The number 28 has found a home on the backs of several solid contributors to the Indians over the years, especially during a good run for the number in the 1970s and 1980s, when the likes of Rick Manning, Bert Blyleven, and Cory Snyder took it to the field. But since 2012, the number has been Kluber’s while he has grown into a two-time Cy Young winner and two-time All-Star. Read More

The Indians’ current number 30 is once again in spring camp for Cleveland, hoping to latch on to a spot in an outfield mix that has a few question marks heading into the 2018 season.

Tyler Naquin has had opportunities in each of the last two seasons to make a lasting impression on the coaching staff of the Indians, but he instead played his way back to Triple-A Columbus and watched other men fill the outfield void. Read More
