Examining Deadline Deals For Starting Pitchers

Major League Baseball’s trade deadline has past and now we are left to let the dust settle. Our hometown club made a big (though controversial) splash this year by acquiring ace starting pitcher Ubaldo Jiménez from the Colorado Rockies for top prospects Drew Pomeranz and Alex White, along with minor leaguers Joe Gardner and Matt McBride. The move was certainly a change from the norm in respects to the usually conservative, play for the future Cleveland Indians and this left me to wonder how often has a move like this panned out?

I took the time to research some of the bigger deadline deals over the last 50 years or so and came across some interesting information. Many moves have benefited teams by adding a star (i.e. Carlos Beltran with Houston and Mark McGwire with St. Louis) and then there’s the other side that makes you think maybe the rental wasn’t worth the price of prospects (i.e. Mark Teixiera from Texas to Atlanta for Neftali Perez and Elvis Andrus or A.J. Pierzynski from Minnesota to San Francisco for Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser).
