The American League Championship Series gets under way at the Kingdome in Seattle as the Mariners host the Cleveland Indians, hot off of an ALDS sweep of the Boston Red Sox. Their winning ways run out as they drop a 3-2 decision to the Mariners for their first playoff loss since 1954.
Seattle scored a pair in the second off of Martinez on a two-run home run by third baseman Mike Blowers. The Indians responded the next half inning, as Carlos Baerga and Albert Belle reached on a single and a walk and, after an out, Baerga scored on a single by Jim Thome. Manny Ramirez loaded the bases with a single, but Paul Sorrento grounded into a double play to end the threat.
The Indians tied the game in the seventh when Belle homered off of Wolcott, but Luis Sojo gave the Mariners the lead right back for good in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-double off of Martinez that scored Jay Buhner from second with the deciding run of the ball game.
