Countdown to Opening Day – 9 days

The current wearer of the number nine for the Cleveland Indians, outfielder Brandon Barnes, received disappointing news on Monday when he was informed that he will not be on the 25-man roster for the club to open the season.

Back with the organization for a second season, Barnes was hoping to latch on to a spot in the wide open mix in one of the two vacancies in the corner outfield positions with the team. Returning on a minor league contract with a spring invite for the second straight year, Barnes got a cup of coffee with the Tribe last September when rosters expanded after spending the majority of the campaign with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers.

The 32-year-old right-handed hitter struggled to get going in Goodyear for the Indians this spring, failing to capitalize on the opportunities given him. He appeared in 14 games, putting together a .185/.267/.519 slash with five hits – three of which were home runs. He drove in five runs, but struck out ten times in 27 at bats. It followed a similar spring performance from a season ago, when all five of his hits were for extra bases, but he struck out in 20 of his 35 at bats with a .143/.184/.486 line.

Barnes played 132 times for the Clippers last season in his seventh season at the Triple-A level and his fourth straight year there. He was an International League All-Star for Columbus both mid-season and post-season and had a good year overall, hitting .273 with a .347 on-base percentage and .444 slugging mark with 39 doubles, two triples, 14 homers, 81 RBI, and 19 stolen bases. The strikeout remained a big part of his game at the plate, as he went down on strikes 152 times in 498 total at bats.

With Cleveland (while wearing the number zero), he appeared in 19 games in the final month of the season and had 19 at bats. He hit .263 with a homer and two runs batted in.

Barnes has been in the pro game since his sixth round selection in the 2005 draft by the Houston Astros. He made his big league debut for the club in 2012 and played in a career-high 136 games in 2013 before moving on to the Colorado Rockies. He saw some regular work over the next three years in Denver, but spent 2017 in the minors with the Miami Marlins organization.

For the last three years, the number nine had been on the back of utility man Erik Gonzalez. He was shipped to Pittsburgh after last season in the trade that brought outfielder Jordan Luplow and utility man Max Moroff over from the Pirates. Gonzalez will now have a chance to see more regular time in the Pirates organization, as Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington reported on Monday that he will serve as the team’s starting shortstop.

Gonzalez appeared in a career-high 81 games last season, playing first base, second base, shortstop, and third base. He also logged innings in left field in 2017 and right field in 2016.
