Mike Clevinger capitalized on an opportunity to help out the Indians, throwing five and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. The Cleveland bullpen did the rest in a combined 1-0 one-hit victory over the Kansas City Royals.

The Indians won the series with the team victory to improve to 17-13 on the year while sitting in first place. The two teams wore throwback jerseys honoring Negro League teams from their respective cities, with the Royals representing the Monarchs and the Indians representing the Buckeyes. The uniforms were to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

Clevinger was called upon to make a spot start for the injured Corey Kluber. He earned the win in his first start of the season, striking out five and walking four on the afternoon. The Cleveland bullpen did its job to near perfection, completing the final three and one-third innings without allowing a run or a hit while walking a pair. Cody Allen earned his ninth save in nine chances.

The Indians scored their lone run of support in the top of the fifth against left-hander Danny Duffy. Yan Gomes doubled to the wall in left-center and moved to third on a sacrifice. Carlos Santana lined a single back up the middle just past Duffy into center field to drive home Gomes. Santana entered the game a lifetime .327 hitter at Kauffman Stadium and a .409 hitter against Duffy.
