For the sixth time this season, Luis Tiant throws a complete game shutout as he and his Cleveland teammates blank the Detroit Tigers, 3-0.

The outing by “El Tiante” continued an impressive 13-game stretch for the fifth year Indians starter. He threw four consecutive shutouts from April 28th to May 12th and had another one on June 9th against the same Tigers before shutting them out on just three hits in game one of a doubleheader in Cleveland. He was credited with eleven complete games during this stretch with 102 strikeouts in 111 innings and a 0.89 ERA while earning a 10-3 record.

The Indians scored three times in the first and those runs would be the only ones of the ball game. Max Alvis walked and Larry Brown singled to left before Jose Cardenal knocked Alvis in with a single. A groundout by Tony Horton moved both runners up and each scored on a two-run double by Joe Azcue.

Tiant allowed a leadoff double in the third and singles in the fifth and eighth innings, joining a pair of walks, but only that runner in the third was able to advance past first base in the game. In winning his eleventh game of the season, he struck out nine and lowered his season ERA to 1.20. The Indians improved to 38-32 on the season and moved within six and a half games of the first place Tigers in the American League.
