First baseman George Burns goes a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate, hitting two singles, three doubles, and a triple while driving in a pair, as the Cleveland Indians pummel the first place Detroit Tigers, 16-5, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Batting fifth in the lineup, Burns was one of several Indians to put up big days at the plate, but his was the most impressive of the starting nine. Eight of nine starters registered at least one hit and Rube Lutzke had a pair replacing Chick Fewster at second after one at bat. Left fielder Charlie Jamieson had three hits, including a pair of triples, and scored a game-high three runs. Center fielder/manager Tris Speaker had two hits and a stolen base. Cleanup hitter and shortstop Joe Sewell singled and homered and drove in four. His brother, Luke Sewell, had a pair of singles and three runs driven in.

Cleveland actually trailed 1-0 through three innings, but put up four runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth to blow the game wide open. The team strung together 22 hits in the ball game off of two Detroit pitchers. Earl Whitehill, who took the loss, allowed seven runs on ten hits, while reliever Ken Holloway pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed nine runs on a dozen hits.

Joe Shaute evened his record at 7-7 with a complete game win. He allowed five runs on 13 hits, walked one, and struck out one.

Burns will add two more hits in the second game of the doubleheader for good measure in a 3-2 loss to the Tigers.
