Jhonny Peralta is born in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
The right-handed hitting Peralta had the unenviable task of replacing legendary shortstop Omar Vizquel in Cleveland, one that would affect his reception amongst the fans as, while his bat had significantly more pop in it, his glove and arm paled in comparison to the flashy fielding Vizquel.
Peralta broke into the Majors at the age of 21, playing 77 games at short and third in his rookie season in 2003. He played just eight games for the club in 2004 before a breakout .292 season with 24 homers and 78 RBI in 2005. He played primarily at shortstop, but would transition to third later on in his Indians career preceding his trade in his contract year of 2010 to the Detroit Tigers for Giovanni Soto, a minor league pitcher.
Peralta made the AL All-Star team with Detroit in 2011 and again in 2013. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent following the 2013 season on a four-year, $53 million contract.
