A tragic boating accident that hours earlier claimed the life of young Indians reliever Steve Olin took a second casualty, as reliever Tim Crews succumbed to his injuries sustained when his bass boat struck a dock on Little Lake Nellie on an off day for the club during their spring training work at Winter Haven, Florida. Crews was 31 years old.

Crews (center), less than two weeks short of his 32nd birthday, had suffered a serious brain injury as well as an injured lung and was pronounced dead in the early morning of the 23rd. Another passenger in the boat, 35-year-old teammate Bobby Ojeda (right), suffered a severely lacerated scalp and lost four pints of blood from his wound, but would recover and eventually return to the mound after a lengthy rehab.

The pair were the first active baseball players to die since New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson was lost in a small plane crash in 1979.
