Satchel Paige will make his first start for the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night against Washington.
Paige has appeared in eight games since being signed by the Indians less than a month ago. All of his appearances have come in relief, building a record of 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 18 innings. His four and two-thirds innings on Friday night was his longest outing since signing with the Tribe. This will be his first start with the Tribe, but also all season. He did not make a start with the Kansas City Monarchs, the Negro League team from which the Tribe purchased his contract.
After taking three of four from the Boston Red Sox this weekend, the Indians find themselves in the middle of a logjam in the standings. Cleveland, Boston and the New York Yankees all trail the Philadelphia Athletics by one game in the standings. Cleveland is just two percentage points ahead of the Yankees and three ahead of the Red Sox.
Paige will be opposed by right-hander Early Wynn (7-11, 5.44) of the Senators. The Indians are idle today and Wednesday. They’ll play the Senators on Tuesday evening and Thursday afternoon before welcoming the New York Yankees for a four-game series this weekend.
