Future Hall of Famer Larry Doby is born.
At the age of 23, Doby would sign with the Cleveland Indians and would become the second African American to play Major League Baseball and the first in the American League. He played sparingly in his first season in 1947, but would become a regular in the Indians lineup in 1948, batting .301 with 14 home runs to help lead Cleveland to the AL pennant and a World Series title. He was an AL All-Star for seven consecutive years from 1949 to 1955.
Following the 1955 season, he was sent to the Chicago White Sox for a pair of players, but he would return to Cleveland prior to the 1958 season in a five-player trade with the Baltimore Orioles. Before the start of the 1959 season, he would again be traded in a deal for Tito Francona, the second time in his career he was dealt in a swap for him.
He was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame through induction by the Veteran’s Committee in 1998. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 79.
