Cleveland’s Al Rosen is selected as the unanimous winner of the American League Most Valuable Player award.

Rosen finished his 1953 season with a .336 batting average, 43 home runs, and 145 RBI, the latter two leading the AL. He fell just one-hundredth of a point short of Washington’s Mickey Vernon in the batting title race, causing him to miss winning the AL Triple Crown. He is the third Indians player to win the MVP, joining George Burns (1926) and Lou Boudreau (1948).

He remains the last Cleveland Indians player to win the award.

New York’s Yogi Berra finished second in the voting, while former Indians players Vernon and Minnie Minoso (Chicago) finished third and fourth, respectively.
