Future Hall of Famer Sam Rice is born in Morocco, Indiana.
The longtime Major League right fielder Rice did not debut in the Bigs until 1915 at the age of 25. He came up with the Washington Senators that season for four games and eventually became a regular in their lineup. He consistently hit over .300 throughout his career and received MVP consideration during his 1926 season.
Rice signed with the Cleveland Indians one week before his 44th birthday in 1934. He spent just one season with the Tribe, his final in the MLB, and hit .293 in 97 games, hitting one home run and driving in 33 as a corner outfielder.
He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1963 by the Veteran’s Committee.
