A funeral service is held in center field of Cleveland Stadium as Indians owner Bill Veeck, with some players in attendance, buries the 1948 pennant. The Indians were officially eliminated from the 1949 American League the day before.
The Indians had lost four straight games and will lose two more, their longest losing skid of the season, before winning each of the final seven games to end the season. Records of 11-15 in May and 13-12 in September erase a combined 39-21 record in June and July. They will finish eight games in back of the New York Yankees, who defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers, four games to one, in the World Series.
