Outfielder/designated hitter Ellis Burks is born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The former first round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 1983 amateur draft spent three seasons towards the end of his career in an Indians uniform from 2001 to 2003.
With Cleveland in 2001, he hit .280 in 124 games with 28 home runs and 74 RBI. He topped that in 2002, hitting .301 with 32 home runs and 91 RBI in 138 games. The oft-injured Burks missed time during the 2003 season, playing just 55 games, after it was found he had a pinched ulnar nerve in his right elbow that was causing deterioration of his right hand.
