Pitcher Steve Dunning of the Cleveland Indians hits a grand slam homer off Diego Segui of the Oakland Athletics to give the Indians a 5 – 0 lead, but reliever Phil Hennigan gets the victory in the Indians’ 7 – 5 win. Due to the adoption the designated hitter rule in 1973, Dunning’s slam will remain the last one hit by an American League pitcher until Seattle’s Félix Hernández does it in an interleague game against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in 2008.
