The Cleveland Indians trade outfielder Lou Clinton to the New York Yankees for catcher Doc Edwards, who won’t play in the majors until 1970, with the Philadelphia Phillies. Edwards would return to Cleveland in 1985, this time as a coach. He would be promoted to manager in 1987 and held that position until 1989.

When I was a kid, my father and I waited outside the ballpark at the players enterance before a game and Doc Edwards (who was manager at the time) walked by. People were hounding him for autographs and he refused everyone saying that he needed to get inside. When I held out my autograph booklet he looked at me, picked it up and signed it. He said, “I can never say ‘no’ to a little kid.”

Doc Edwards may not have been an awesome manager or player, but he was a hell of a guy.
