Today in Tribe History: July 2, 1989
The Cleveland Indians trade outfielder Oddibe McDowell to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Dion James. McDowell had been acquired by Cleveland prior to the ’89 season from Texas in the Julio Franco deal and had spent a mere 69 games in a Tribe uniform before being dealt. As for Dion James, he would finish out the 1989 season strong for the Indians, hitting .306 in 71 games. He would play the 1990 season with Cleveland as well but was released that October after an elbow injury would force him to miss the following season. He would return in 1992 and play four more seasons as a member of the New York Yankees before retiring in 1996.
