Game Preview #65: Pittsburgh Pirates (33-31) at Cleveland Indians (33-31)

By Mike Brandyberry

Yesterday, Ubaldo Jimenez couldn’t find the magic he had in his previous two starts and the bullpen couldn’t keep the Tribe in the game, as the Pirates won, 9-2. Michael Brantley had his 22-game hitting streak snapped in the defeat.

Today, the Indians will try to win the series with Jeanmar Gomez (4-5, 4.71 ERA) on the mound. Gomez has struggled, like several other Tribe starters, lately. The Pirates have never faced Gomez, but he is 1-3, with a 7.84 ERA in his last four starts. Gomez allowed two runs over five innings in his last start at Cincinnati. He left trailing in the game, and like yesterday, the bullpen imploded, giving the Reds a 7-1 victory.

The Pirates will counter with Brad Lincoln (3-2, 3.15 ERA). Lincoln was originally working out of the bullpen to start the season, but has been moved to the rotation in recent weeks. Since his move to the rotation, Lincoln has struggled and has not made it out of the fifth inning to date. Last Tuesday, Lincoln allowed four runs and nine hits in four and one-third innings at Baltimore. The Pirates lost to the Orioles, 8-6.

The Indians continue to struggle to score runs. Yesterday Tribe manager Manny Acta would not comment when asked if the team was considering signing Manny Ramirez. Ramirez was released from his contract with the Oakland Athletics, Friday evening. He has finished serving his second 50-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs and is now 40 years old.

Today’s contest features the chance for fathers and children to play catch on the field after the game. The game can be seen on SportsTime Ohio and heard on the Indians Radio Network, beginning at 1:05 pm.
