Game #56: Cleveland Indians (30-25) at Detroit Tigers (25-31)

By Mike Brandyberry

Jeanmar Gomez struggled to survive five innings against the Tiger offense, but the Tribe used long balls from Michael Brantley and Casey Kotchman to spur Cleveland past the Motor City Kitties, 9-6. Gomez was in control until a four-run Tiger outburst chased him from the game after five innings. The bullpen locked down the final four innings to give the Tribe their fifth win against Detroit this season.

The Tribe will go for the sweep this afternoon when Derek Lowe (7-3, 3.06 ERA) takes the mound. Lowe has not faced the Tigers since 2008, but is 6-2, with a 2.34 ERA lifetime against the Tigers. He leads all of Major League Baseball with ground balls induced.

Left-hander Casey Crosby (0-1, 16.20 ERA) will try to snap the Tigers’ three game losing skid. Despite beating Drew Smyly on Tuesday, the Tribe is still 5-12 against lefty starters this season. This is only Crosby’s second big league start. Last Friday he walked four, allowed six runs in three and one-third innings against the Yankees.

Brantley homered last night to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He is seven of 16 on the season against Tiger pitching. Jose Lopez is still listed as day-to-day with a back strain. With a left-hander on the mound, today would be a day Lopez would play in place of Lonnie Chisenhall if he were healthy.

The Tribe will look make it six straight wins against the Tigers this afternoon at 1:05 at Comerica Park. The game can be seen on SportsTime Ohio or heard on the Indians Radio Network.
