Game #34 – Cleveland Indians (18-15) vs. Boston Red Sox (14-19)

By Matthew Van Wormer

The Indians are having a tough go of things in Boston this weekend. Last night, they took another one on the chin as Felix Doubront and the Red Sox bullpen held the Indians to just three hits and one run. Cleveland will try to avoid their first series loss since Kansas City took two of three from the Tribe, April 24-26.

With the Tigers losing in Oakland for a second straight night, the Indians lead remains two games in the Central Division. That isn’t going to last though and the Indians know it. They need to get back to winning games and winning series if they want to continue to be a contender for the postseason.

Today, Cleveland goes up against Daniel Bard (2-4, 4.83 ERA). Bard is coming off of back to back losses and looking to win for the first time since April 27. Bard has pitched himself to a decision in every single start this season, including a bullpen appearance against the Twins. The Indians active roster is hitting .348 against the righty in limited at-bats.

Justin Masterson (1-2, 4.89) is looking for his fourth straight quality start and a win to go along with it. It took Masterson until May 3 to get his first win of the season, and about as long to find some consistency on the mound. He does like sticking it to the team that traded him away in 2009. He is 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA in four games against his former team. One of those starts was a complete game shutout.

The Indians and Red Sox finish up their series starting at 1:35 at Fenway Park. After the game, the Indians will head to MInnesota for a two game set before coming home to Progressive Field on Wednesday. Catch all of today’s action on the Cleveland Indians Radio Network and SportsTime Ohio.
