Game #10 – Cleveland Indians (5-4) vs. Seattle Mariners (6-6)

By Matthew Van Wormer

What If?

What if Jason Donald stepped in for our All-Star shortstop, Asdrubal Cabrera, completed a comeback and drove in the game winning run after the Tribe was down 8-1?

That’s exactly what happened last night and it’s a four-game winning streak that the Indians will look to extend tonight as they play the fifth game of their nine game road trip. If you turned off the game after the bottom of the fourth inning, you probably weren’t alone. It’s inevitable that hundreds of Tribe fans woke up this morning, checked the box score and rubbed their eyes three or four times to make sure it was real.

Tonight, Derek Lowe (2-0, 1.98 ERA) will be on the mound for the Tribe, trying to continue what has been a great start to the year for him in an Indians’ uniform. In his last start, Lowe went 6.2 innings, giving up three earned runs, striking out two and walking none. His command was on point as he got ground ball after ground ball. Eleven of them got through the infield but his offense had their coming out party, scoring seven runs in the first inning to get Lowe the victory.

Because of their season opening mini-series in Japan against Oakland, Justin Vargas (1-1, 3.44 ERA) is already making his fourth start of the season. His last start, against a potent Texas offense, was his worst, and it wasn’t that bad. He went 6.2 innings giving up four runs on seven hits including one home run.

The Indians have had at least two of their three aspects (hitting, starting pitching, bullpen) clicking in each of their last four games. They will try to get all three on the same page tonight to get their fifth victory in a row and sixth overall on the season. A 3-0 start would look really good on an Indians pitcher, especially a veteran whose contributions were a question mark when the season began.

It will be another late night for those of us on the shores of Lake Erie as the game starts at 7:10 in the Emerald City, 10:10 locally on STO, and the Cleveland Indians Radio Network.
