Today in Tribe History: April 1, 1939

Former Cleveland pitcher Phil Niekro is born in Blaine, Belmont County, Ohio.  “Knucksie” made his major league debut in 1964 with the Milwaukee Braves.  He played for the Tribe in 1986 and part of 1987 winning 18 games in his time with Cleveland. He retired at the end of the ’87 season at the age of 48. He would finish with a win total of 318 games in a career that spanned 24 years and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997.
