DTTWLN? Fan of the Week: Carl Vass
By Matthew Van Wormer
I met this week’s Fan of the Week Hall of Fame inductee about three and a half years ago when I started working for the School Employee’s Lorain County Credit Union. He was the only other male on the teller line. Thank God he liked sports, and even more importantly, the Indians. Carl is everything you could ever want in a Tribe fan. Loyal, understanding and able to deal with extreme disappointment with the best of them.
“I have been a Tribe fan all my life but didn’t really understand what being a ‘real fan’ was until I was about 15 years old.”
Why did it take him that long to figure it out? Carl didn’t get started with the Indians like a lot of us. He didn’t grow up at Municipal Stadium. Money was tight and trips to the ballgame just didn’t happen. However, in 1995, a family friend scored tickets to a game late in the season and Carl attended his first Cleveland Indians game on the night they clinched the Central Division against the Orioles. Seems like a lot of people have great stories about that game, huh?
“I didn’t realize how important this was. I was 15 and my friend told me if they pull this off, the place will erupt. Sure enough, Jose Mesa got the last batter of the game to pop up to Jim Thome and my friend was right. It certainly was a great time to be a Tribe fan.”
“Just his skill set and the way he performs. He has great potential and could be just as good as Lofton some day.”
Carl is ready for the 2012 season to get under way and he expects big things from the Warriors of Lake Erie. He likes what he sees on paper from top to bottom and thinks they will definitely make the playoffs. He knows things can go wrong though, but he is staying optimistic.
“I really think, if we can avoid the big injury we can be a tough team to play against. Our pitching is going to give hitters fits, and if our hitters produce? The sky is the limit for this team.
Well said, Carl. Welcome to the DTTWLN? Fan of the Week Hall of Fame! You’ve definitely earned your spot!
