DTTWLN? Fan of the Week: Kimberly Fletcher
By Matthew Van Wormer
The next member of the Fan of the Week Hall of Fame is Kimberly Fletcher. Kimberly lives in Detroit with her husband, Mark and their two children, Elise (5) and William(2) who are also huge Tribe fans!
“My daughter loves going to games to cheer on Choo. My son has to wear an Indians shirt at least 3-4 times a week and tells us he is going to be an Indians player when he gets big.”
Pretty brave for a two-year old living in the Motor City! Kimberly actually met Mark at work when they noticed that they both had Indians souvenirs on their desks in an office full of Tigers fans. When Mark proposed to Kimberly, he didn’t do the normal ring proposal. He used a Tribe jersey. Their first date was at Jacobs Field and they had an Indians themed wedding.
Kimberly has been a Tribe fan since birth thanks to her dad who ended up with two daughters and no sons. Kimberly says that her dad brainwashed them from an early age to make sure that they would be Indians fans. Since games weren’t on television much when Kimberly was growing up, the radio was where she, her dad and the rest of her family followed the Tribe in good times and (mostly) bad.
“Some of my fondest memories were listening to Herb Score on the porch while eating a popsicle or going to Municipal Stadium and scoring seats behind home plate while eating 5-6 hot dogs.”
Unfortunately, it seems that Kimberly can’t get her favorite hot dog topping at the field anymore.
“I am really sad they got rid of the onions, the hot dog does just not taste the same. So Mr. Dolan if you are reading this, bring back the chopped onions!”
Kimberly celebrated many a birthday at Municipal Stadium and Jacobs/Progressive Field but the best birthday gift she ever received came in the form of a long-awaited Championship. It was September 8th, 1995 and the Indians were on the doorstep of the playoffs, needing just one win to clinch the Central Division, with almost a full month left to play in the season. The Tribe did what they had to do, beating the Baltimore Orioles, 3-2, clinching the division title.
“I remember seeing my dad tear up as they raised the flag and told me, ‘This is the resurrection of Cleveland.’ We stayed until they kicked us out of the park and then stood by the player’s lot to get autographs. I never wanted that night to end.”
Being a Tribe fan for the long time that she has, Kimberly has lots of players that she loved but the top of her list includes Joe Carter, Jim Thome, Jason Kipnis and Carlos “Slamtana.” A little while back Kimberly, who writes for a blog on parenting, was looking around on Twitter, which she was new to, looking for Indians blogs and Twitter feeds to follow. She stumbled across Did The Tribe Win Last Night (@didtribewin) and became our very first follower! Certainly, she is very deserving of being named to the DTTWLN? Fan of the Week Hall of Fame!
