Game Preview: Seattle (63-89) vs. Cleveland (75-75)

By Matt Van Wormer

After a successful weekend against the Minnesota Twins, the Indians start their final home stand of the year a day earlier than expected to make up a game with the Seattle Mariners that was washed out back in May.

In the Twin Cities, the Indians scored 23 runs over the weekend, earning a sweep and getting back to the .500 mark.  Shelley Duncan, Carlos Santana and Jim Thome all had dingers for the Tribe as they got great efforts from Ubaldo Jimenez, Jeanmar Gomez and Justin Masterson, who earned his 12th win on the year.

Today, David Huff (2-5, 3.40, 1.28 WHIP) takes on fellow southpaw, Charlie Furbush (3-9, 4.86, 1.43 WHIP), as he tries to get back into the win column after taking losses in his last three starts.  Huff got hit hard in his last start against Texas when he gave up eight runs in just four innings of work, including a grand slam by Josh Hamilton.

Furbush has struggled even more lately as he has lost his last five decisions.  Over that time, he has given up 19 runs, four home runs and 30 hits.  He has not received a lot of run support and only struggled with his command in one of those starts.  Furbush went to the Mariners at the trade deadline when the Tigers acquired Doug Fister.

No Indians player has more than one at bat against Furbush in their career and as for the Mariners facing Huff, no one has more than six at bats against the lefty.  Ichiro and Franklin Gutierrez each have two hits off of Huff with one of Gutierrez’ hits being a solo home run.

The Indians will look to continue their winning ways to keep their confidence level up.  The team is looking to build their first four game win streak since May 20-23. Those who say this team has nothing to play for couldn’t be more wrong.  Finishing the season strong will go a long way to get the Indians off on the right foot in 2012.  Manny Acta is doing a great job of keeping these guys ready to play each and every day.  First pitch today will be at 4:05.
