Game Preview: Cleveland (72-73) vs. Texas (84-64)

By Matt Van Wormer

Last night Justin Masterson gave up three home runs to the Texas Rangers as they took down the Indians by the final score of 10-4.  Just to put those three home runs in perspective, Masterson had given up just seven all season long heading into last night’s start.  Matt Harrison pitched well for the Rangers and earned his 12th win while Masterson fell to 11-10.

Tonight, David Huff (2-4, 3.05, 1.17 WHIP) takes the bump in a Nationally televised ESPN game against Derek Holland (13-5, 4.12, 1.39 WHIP) who has been given very good run support for most of the season, including 21 runs in just his last two starts.

Huff has shown signs of greatness in many of his starts but he has also looked like the young arm that he is, still struggling to come back from the minors after not earning a spot in the rotation at the beginning of the season.  While he is definitely a different pitcher than he was a year ago, Huff still has quite a bit of work to do.

In two games against the Tribe this year, Holland has been two different pitchers.  He threw a complete-game shutout back in June but then gave up six runs in less than two innings on August 5th.  The offense bailed Holland out though as they came back and got the victory.

Huff doesn’t have much experience against the Rangers but the always dangerous Adrian Beltre is 3 for 6 with a double against Huff in his career.  David will have to show the brilliance he showed early on if he wants to win in the high-scoring Ballpark at Arlington.

The Indians are fighting to get back to .500 while the Rangers are still trying to keep the Angels at bay.  Los Angeles is continually keeping pace with Texas, something the Indians, unfortunately, weren’t able to do in their own division.  First pitch is slated for 7:00.
