Game Preview: Oakland (60-75) vs. Cleveland (67-65)

By Matt Van Wormer

Last night, the Indians bats finally seemed to wake up a bit with Kosuke Fukudome, Carlos Santana and Jack Hannahan supplying plenty of power to push the Indians to a 6-2 victory over the slumping Athletics.  Jeanmar Gomez pitched better than anyone could have hoped and the bullpen did their thing as well.  Tonight, the Indians go for their third straight win in the series and also look to finish August with an above .500 record for the month.

The Indians will go up against a man they tried to claim during the waiver period, Rich Harden (4-2, 4.55, 1.33 WHIP).  Harden has not faced the Indians this season and didn’t make his first start until July 1st as he was healing from an injury to his throwing shoulder.  The young Indian team he will be facing does not have much history with Harden which gives him a bit of an advantage over the Tribesman.

Ubaldo Jimenez (8-10, 4.71, 1.42 WHIP) will look to build on his dominate performance against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.  In that game, Jimenez went seven innings, scattering the same number of hits, giving up just one earned run and striking out 10.  It was the closest he has come to his Cy Young-self in his short time with the Indians.  So far, in the American League, Jimenez is 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA.  Only three Athletics players have faced Jimenez in their careers.

The Indians have to keep their winning ways going and keep watching that scoreboard after they secure the “W” to see if they are gaining any ground on the Tigers and White Sox.  Both of those teams were in trouble last night but found ways to pull out victories.  As the bats seem to find some consistency, the pitching will have to continue its recent success as well.  There is still time to catch the leader and getting another victory tonight would go a long way to keep this team’s confidence up as they fight down the stretch.
