By Mike Brandyberry
According to several sources, the Cleveland Indians have acquired Kosuke Fukudome from the Chicago Cubs for minor leaguers Carlton Smith and Abner Abreu. Fukudome is owed $4.7 million this season. The Cubs are intending to pick up more than half of Fukudome’s salary for the rest of the season. Fukudome is a free agent at the end of this season.
Fukudome is a 34-year old, left-handed outfielder hitting .273, with three home runs and 13 runs batted in, in 345 plate appearances this season, who had to waive his no-trade clause to come to Cleveland.
Smith pitched the entire season in the Columbus Clipper bullpen, compiling a 2-3 record, 4.50 ERA in 46 innings pitched. Abreu was hitting .243, with 12 home runs, 34 runs batted in and 102 strikeouts in 359 plate appearances at Kinston. Abreu was the Indians, Minor League Player of the Week, last week.
