Cabrera Injures Ankle, MLB Rumors and Roster Shuffles
Asdrubal Cabrera’s twisted ankle from Tuesday’s game currently has him listed as day-to-day, but it is expected he could miss a couple games after landing awkwardly after making a jump-throw to second base on a ball in the whole. Asdrubal had only been out of the Indians’ lineup for seven innings all season before the injury. Orlando Cabrera made his first appearance of the season at shortstop, his long time natural position. Asdrubal has been the leader of the team for the first half of the season, and an American League All-Star selection, who the Indians can’t afford to lose for any considerable amount of time, while the offense continues to struggle.
According to mlbrumors.com, General Manager Chris Antonetti is actively considering all options to improve the major league roster, most notably, the offense. With the loss of Shin-Soo Choo until August, the team is pursuing players like Melky Cabrera, Jeff Francouer or Ryan Ludwick. Antonetti warns however, the trade market is a seller’s market at this time because so many teams still feel they are in contention. The team will not overpay for with top prospects for marginal value. The short term fix for the ball club could be through the promotion of minor league players.
Some promotions will begin as early as Wednesday or Thursday. The team is expected to activate Matt LaPorta from the disabled list today. Manager Manny Acta already announced Zach McAllister will start on Thursday versus Toronto. McAllister, who was acquired for Austin Kearns from the Yankees last July, will replace Fausto Carmona, who aggravated his right quad on Saturday. Josh Judy will most likely be optioned back to Columbus, but the other player to leave the 25-man roster may not be known until Thursday.
